Despite aid cut, Pakistan to work for peace in region

Despite aid cut, Pakistan to work for peace in region

Jan 06, 2018 - 10:35

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistaninfo-icon has renewed its vow to continue working for peace and stability in the region despite the suspension of US security assistance.

In Islamabad, the Foreign Office said on Friday: “We are determined to continue to do all it takes to secure the lives of our citizens and broader stability in the region.”

It called for mutual respect and trust along with patience and persistence, warning that arbitrary deadlines, unilateral pronouncements and shifting goalposts are counterproductive in addressing common threats.

Pakistan had been conducting counter-terrorism operations out of its own pocket, which had cost it over $120 billion over the past one decade and a half, a statement from the ministry said.

“We believe Pakistan-US cooperation in fighting terrorism has directly served US national security interests as well as the larger interests of the international community,” it added as.

Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts were not matched by the Afghan side in terms of clearance of vast stretches of ungoverned spaces across the border, repatriation of refugees, controlling poppy cultivation, drug trafficking and initiating political reconciliation.

Pakistan is engaged with Washington on the move withholding security cooperation. “We are awaiting further details. Impact of the US decision on pursuit of common objectives is also likely to emerge more clearly in due course of time.”
