KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Some Meshrano Jirgainfo-icon or Senate members asked the government to investigate Thursday’s suicide bombing in Kabul that happened during a crackdown on drug sellers.

At least 13 policemen were killed and 22 others, including six civilians, were wounded in the suicide attack in Banayee area near Shinozada Private Hospital on Thursday.

Prior to the blast, a clash erupted between security personnel and shopkeepers during a crackdown on shop owners involved in trading illicit substances.

One of the shopkeepers was killed and four others wounded, and tens of others staged a protest but later a suicide bomber detonated his explosives near a group of security personnel.

At least 1.770 kilograms of heroin, 2.8 kilograms of opium , more than 43 kilograms of hashish, 163 alcoholic drinks, some amount of currency of Pakistani and Indian were recovered during the raids.

Five pistols, two Kalashnikovs, and two hand grenades also captured by security forces. The topic was discussed at Sunday’s session of the Meshrano Jirga.

In her remarks, lawmaker Anarkali Hunaryar said the suicide bombing showed drug dealers and terrorists maintained strong relations  and they did not want their stuff to be confiscated.

Another member Rona Tareen said the issue was ‘fully questionable’ and should not be left behind without probe. Other members expressed similar views and called for the attack to be investigated.

Senate chairman Fazel Hadi Muslimyar, said the cowardly attack showed drug traffickers had strong ties with militants. “The issue is questionable for us that how the demonstration immediately emerged followed by a suicide bombing.”

He tasked the security and defense commission of the upper house to probe the incident along with investigators and present its report to the house.

Meanwhile, Kabul police chief Salem Ihsas said a close and direct relationship between terrorists and drug traffickers could not be ruled out and they were investigating this aspect of the incident as well.

Earlier, the Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon or lower house of parliament had also demanded the government probe the attack.
