Pro-Taliban Pakistani militant leader granted bail

Jan 09, 2018 - 11:39

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): A Pakistani militant leader, blamed for pouring fighters into Afghanistaninfo-icon and charged with sedition, has been granted bail by a court.

Maulana Sufi Muhammad, head of the Tanzim Nifaz Shariat-i-Muhammadi (TNSM), was given bail after spending more than seven years in prison.

Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth of the Peshawar High Court ordered the release of the TNSM chief, who is also the father-in-law of Tehrik-i-Talibaninfo-icon leader Maulana Fazlullah, on statutory and medical grounds.

In his brief order, the judge asked the TNSM head to secure his release by furnishing two bail bonds worth Rs700,000 each. He is currently held in the Peshawar Central Jail.

Defense counsel Fida Gul argued: “The prosecution has failed to produce witnesses in more than seven years against Sufi Muhammad in the courts.” His client is aged 93 years, suffering from different diseases in prison.

In late 2001, Sufi Muhammad had been arrested in Kurram Agency on his return from Afghanistan where he had led 10,000 armed people fighting alongside of the Taliban against US forces.
