KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Two senior government officials and one public representative have been sentenced from three to five years in jail over corruption and other charges, an official said on Wednesday.

The convicts included Dayi-ul-Haq Abid, deputy minister of Hajjinfo-icon and Religious Affairs, Abdul Rahman Ahmadzai, a former Islamic Affairs head at the ministry and Asif Mohmand, a member of the Balkh provincial council, a reliable source.

The government official, wishing anonymity, told Pajhwok Afghan News the sentences were handed down by the primary court of Anti-Corruption Justice Center in an open trail in Kabul.

According to him, Abid and Mohmand, accused of forgery, fraud and misuse of authorities were awarded five years and two months in jail. Ahmadzai was also sentenced to three years in jail for same charges.

Only Abdul Rahman Ahmadzai was present at the trial and verdicts for the other two -- Abid and Mohmand -- were issued in absentia.

Jamshed Rasouli, the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) spokesman, confirming the trial, said two other MoHRA employees were also under judicial prosecution over similar charges.
