FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Five large barns are being constructed at a cost of $2 million in Wakhan district of northeastern Badakhshan province to protect household animals from snow leopards in winter, an official said Tuesday.

Provincial Sectoral head, Osama Basir, told Pajhwok Afghan News the barns, with each having the capacity to accommodate 500 livestock, would be constructed in 2018 with UNDP support to save animals from leopard attacks in winter.

Ghulam Nabi Sarfaraz, Badakhsgab environmental department head, said: “We have proposed to the Wildlife Conservation Organization to cover Zibak district as well because snow leopards stray into residential areas in search of food and attack household animals in the area”.

Recently a snow leopard attacked people’s livestock and killed 10 animals and later an illegal armed commander killed the leopard.

Eng. Mohammad Alam Alami, provincial head of the agricultureinfo-icon department, said welcomed the project that he said would help save wildlife in the Wakhan National park.
