Jan 22, 2018 - 20:08

KUNDUZ (Pajhwok): More than 60 Talibaninfo-icon militants have been killed and another 32 wounded during a security operation in northern Kunduz province, local officials said Monday, a claim the rebels rejected.

Afghan National Army’s 209th Shaheen Military Corps unit chief, Sayed Qurban Musavi, told Pajhwok Afghan News the clearing operations were launched a week ago and wrapped up yesterday in Chahar Dara district of the province.

He said during the operations at least 65 Taliban rebels were killed and 32 others were wounded. He said only one security man was wounded in the offensive that had NATOinfo-icon air support.

He further said: “We had successfully done our job in Chahar Dara district and now we ready to advance on other areas.”  Over 20 villages were cleared from rebels’ presence, he concluded.

However, a resident of the area, Abdul Rahim, said a number of local people’s houses were destroyed in airstrikes and attacks. He claimed the insurgents staged a quick comeback after the security forces had left.

The Taliban also confirmed the offensive and the group spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed 21 security forces were killed and several others were wounded in clashes with the fighters. He confirmed the killing of 8 fighters and injuries to 11 others.

Chahar Dara has been the most contested district of Kunduz and some parts of the town are under Taliban control.
