JALALABAD (Pajhwok): A three-day anti-polio vaccination campaign targeting 1.1 million children in eastern provinces kicked off on Monday in Nangarhar province, where 8,000 children missed the vaccine in previous drives.

Nangarhar Public Healthinfo-icon Director Dr. Najibullah Kamawal, who launched the three-day vaccination drive in Jalalabad, said 1.1 million children in the eastern zone and 800,000 children in Nangarhar would be administered polio drops.

He said the campaign was the first in 2018 and so far one positive polio had surfaced in Nangarhar this month. He warned if the polio vaccination drive was threatened, more positive cases would emerge in future.

Kamawal said hurdles to polio vaccinations still existed in five districts of Nangarhar, depriving 8,000 children below the age of five years of polio drops. He said these children could not be administered polio drops due to the presence of insurgents.

He said all prayer leaders, ulemainfo-icon and teachers had been formally informed to help and support the anti-polio drive so that all children were vaccinated against the crippling disease.

Mualvi Abdul Zahir Haqqani, director Hajjinfo-icon and Religious affairs, during the anti-polio campaign launch, urged families to make sure their children were given polio drops, which he said was halal and legitimate from Islamic perspective.
