Bilawal Zardari wants Haqqani network dismantled

Bilawal Zardari wants Haqqani network dismantled

Feb 08, 2018 - 09:13

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistaninfo-icon People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has called for dismantling the Haqqani networkinfo-icon through coordinated action by Pakistan and Afghanistaninfo-icon

Addressing scholars and researchers at the Woodrow Wilson think-tank in Washington, the upcoming PPP chief suggested a credible and verifiable mechanism for action against the dreaded group.

Bilawal, the only son of charismatic ex-premier Benazir Bhutto, urged the estranged neighbours to eschew blame game and jointly investigate allegations of cross-border intrusion of militants.

In a statement from the PPP, he said: “Extremists and militants of any persuasion who seek to advance their security and foreign policy agendas are a threat to peace and security in the region.”

The use of religion as a weapon of war in Afghanistan and turning a blind eye to the emergence of non-state actors was a grave strategic mistake, he remarked.

Bilawal said: “I have seen photographs of former jihadiinfo-icon commanders feted by (then) President Reagan at the White House where they were greeted. Today, the so-called moral equivalents of George Washington have held my country and the region hostage.”
