Sayyaf off to Saudi Arabia for talks on terrorism

Sayyaf off to Saudi Arabia for talks on terrorism

Feb 10, 2018 - 16:04

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Veteran jihadi leader Abdul Rab Rasoul Sayyaf has flown to Saudi Arabia for talks on extremism and terrorism with Saudi officials, a well-placed source said Saturday.

An individual, who is accompanying Sayyaf to the kingdom, told Pajhwok Afghan News the purpose of the trip was to discuss terrorism and extremism in Islamic countries and the region.

“Sayyaf being an important personality in the Islamic Worldinfo-icon and a renowned Islamic scholar will meet religious scholars, different Imams beside his talks with Saudi officials,” the source said.

The source expected detail discussion on challenges being faced by the Islamic Ummahinfo-icon during the meetings and solution to these issues.

It is pertinent to mention here that last year Saudi Arabia inaugurated a counter-terrorism centre in Riyadh, the capital.

Painda Hekmat, advisor to the Chief Executive Office on Gulf and Arabic countries affairs, termed Sayyaf’s trip as vital and added the leader of his own faction, Dawat Party, ‘enjoyed’ historic relations with Saudi Arabia.

He said Sayyaf had been formally invited by Saudi Arabia and the trip would help further strengthen Kabul-Riyadh ties.

The source believed the jihadi leader was ‘a strong critic’ of terrorism and extremism and his discussion on these topics would further improve contacts and relations between the two countries.
