Afghan ensemble wins 2018 Polar Music Prize

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Afghanistaninfo-icon’s National Institute of Music and American heavy metal band Metallica were on Wednesday announced as winners of the 2018 Polar Music Prizes.

The Afghan ensemble “revives Afghan music, and shows you can transform lives through music”, the award panel said, hailing Metallica for taking rock music to places it had never been before.

Both winners have been invited to receive their awards, including a cash prize of $124,000) each, on June 14 from members of the Swedish royal family in Stockholm, according to the Associated Press.

Afghanistan’s National Institute of Music and its founder Dr, Ahmad Sarmast will receive the Polar Prize for classical music. The institute supports orphans, street children and young girls - training them as singers and musicians.
