KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Participants of a gathering marking the 29th anniversary of the former Soviet Union military withdrawal from Afghanistaninfo-icon on Wednesday asked the Russian Federation to pay war compensation to the Afghans.

They believed the Red Army was defeated at the cost of sacrifices offered by the millions of Afghans and their unity.

Tomorrow (Thursday) will be marked as the 29th anniversary of the former Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan.  A 120,000-strong red army equipped with sophisticated weaponry, invaded Afghanistan and installed Babrak Karmal as president of the country 36 years ago.

During the invasion, Afghanistan was turned into rubble. More than one million Afghans lost their lives, thousands were maimed and another five millions migrated to neighboring Iran and Pakistan.

Speaking at the gathering, Abdul Hadi Arghandiwal, member of the Nuhzat-i-Islami Afghanistan party, said the Afghans resistance and struggles resulted in the defeat of the former supper power and victory of Mujahidin, but the wounds of the people of Afghanistan could not heal.

He said the mujahidin had been successful until they followed the guidance of Allah and rejected personal interest.

He told the Talibaninfo-icon: “If you are Muslims and want the divine law to be practiced here and strangers’ law eradicated then come and end the fighting so no reason is left for the continuation of fighting in the country.”

Jalaluddin Jalal, head of the Azadaghan Foundation, said 29 years had passed, but Russia was yet to pay Afghanistan the former Soviet Union’s war compensation.

He said Russia should pay compensation for the Soviet Union’s destruction in Afghanistan.

He said the communist government established after the 1979 coup was resulted in mass migrationinfo-icon, persecution and killing of thousands of people.

Jalal added the international community forgot about Afghanistan after the defeat of Soviet Union and after the 9/11 attacks, the US returned to help Afghanistan divided on ethic, tribal and sectarian lines.
