Weesa urges UN to help construct refugee township

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Kandahar Governor Zalmai Weesa has appealed to the UN and donor countries to help construct a township for refugee families in the southern province.

He made the appeal during a meeting with Toby Lanzer, the UN chief’s deputy special representative for Afghanistaninfo-icon, at the governor’s house on Wednesday.

Weesa briefed the UNAMA representative about problems plaguing the educationinfo-icon, healthinfo-icon, agricultureinfo-icon sectors and the return of refugees in Kandahar.

The governor said many Afghan refugees who had returned from Pakistaninfo-icon needed assistance, urging UNAMA and other donor agencies to help build a township for them.

About polio, the governor also informed the UNAMA official about ongoing efforts through elders, ulemainfo-icon and civil societyinfo-icon activists to persuade residents of remote areas to give polio vaccine to their children.

Lanzer said UNAMA would extend its activities to remote areas as well under a proper plan. He added the UN wanted to boost cooperation with Afghanistan in agriculture sector.

He in response to the governor’s demands said that he would share these problems with representatives of donor countries and would urge assistance in various fields.

Separately, Kandahar deputy governor, Abdul Hanan Munib, laid the foundation stone of a sciences center at the Shahid Akram Khakrezwal high school.

Munib said it would be the second such center in the country and its construction would cost 31.9 million afghanis funded by the Ministry of Urban Development.
