KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A number of residents of northern Samangan province on Tuesday opposed Zaiuddin Zia’s appointment as deputy governor of the province, calling for Sifatullah Samangani, a provincial council member, to continue serving on the position.

Around 200 supporters of Samangani held a protest gathering in Aibak, the provincial capital. They said Samangani should be appointed as deputy governor of the province.

Sifatullah Samangani, who was present, also said they did not accept Zia as the deputy governor, claiming his appointment came in response to a single call from the Jamiat-i-Islamiinfo-icon (JIA) party

He said he had been approved as the deputy governor of Samangan by the president after being recommended by the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG).

The newly appointed Samangan governor, Abdul Latif Ibrahimi, requested the protestors to give him one day time to resolve the problem and said he would share the issue with the president and IDLG.

Abdul Latif Ibrahimi was inaugurated as governor of Samangan today, replacing Abdul Karim Khaddam, who had earlier refused to step down until the JIA and Turkmen tribesmen endorsed the change.

However, Khaddam later said he had no problem with the appointment of Ibrahimi and that his previous statement was driven by emotions.

Dr. Taimur Sharan, a senior policy official at IDLG, while introducing the new governor, said Khaddam had been named as deputy head of the High Peace Councilinfo-icon (HPC) and Zia as deputy governor.

Akhtar Mohammad Khairkhwa was previously serving as the deputy governor of Samangan.

In the past, Khaddam had served as HPC deputy head and Zia as deputy governor of Samangan.

Zia said he was appointed as deputy governor and Khaddam as HPC deputy head following an agreement with the JIA. Both Zia and Khaddam are members of the party.

The JIA executive chief and ousted governor of northern Balkh province, Atta Mohammad Noor, has been refusing to stand down until his party asks him to do so.
