Corruption alleged in Kunduz City airport project

Mar 07, 2018 - 18:48

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Provincial council members of northeastern Kunduz province on Monday alleged corruption in execution of the provincial airport project.

Yousuf Ayubi, the provincial council head, told reporters here on Wednesday that construction work on the Kunduz Airport was launched last year but the project was poorly implemented.

“The officials ignored us to be in contact with them during the project implementation, the contracted company handed over the project to former governor,” he said.

He said the provincial council members visited the airport and they found many problems in its construction.

In response to a question, he said: “The quality of the retaining wall is very poor, stagnant water on the runaway shows it is unpaved, the front of the terminal is not concrete and some other problems can be seen in this project.”

He said the problems should be taken serious or the airport would destroy soon.

Fawzia Yaftali, secretary of Kunduz provincial council in the meeting also said that corruption had been committed in the Kunduz Airport project she said because it had not been built in a standard manner.

“It is a huge betrayal whoever accepted this project, we visited the airport yesterday and northing was looking okay,” she said.

Yaftali stressed government officials should thoroughly investigate about the project implementation.

But Nejat Saberi, acting in charge of the airport, rejected the provincial council allegations and said the airport was built according to the contract.

He said government officials could see the project from close and then judge about its quality.

The governor’s spokesman, Niamatullah Timori, told Pajhwok Afghan News that a commission had been tasked with investigation of the airport project.

“The commission would seriously assess the project and if there is any problem in it, the contractors would be again invited and those found guilty of corruption would be introduced to justice,” he said.

The construction of Kunduz Airport cost $5 million and was completed in one last year. The newly appointed governor, Abdul Jabbar Naimi, few days back said that the airport would be inaugurated soon for civil flights.

Kunduz province fell twice to Talibaninfo-icon militants over the last two years and as a result, civil flights from the provincial airport were halted.
