Protesters conditionally reopen Kabul-Kandahar road

Protesters conditionally reopen Kabul-Kandahar road

Mar 07, 2018 - 20:11

GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Protestors in southern Ghazni province reopened the Kabulinfo-icon-Kandahar Highway on Wednesday evening for passenger, goods and fresh fruits supplying vehicles for seven days conditionally.

Hundreds of enraged people have blocked the Kabul-Kandahar highway over the past few days to protest civilian deaths blamed on gunmen in uniform in Qarabagh district.

The protest erupted started after two people including a child were killed by a number of armed men, who attacked a house in Shirabad area of Qarabagh district on Friday night.

Angered by the deaths, hundreds of residents of Qarabagh blocked the Kabul-Kandahar highway in their area and Ghazni City since Saturday.

Dr. Mohammad Ayan, one of the organizers of the protest, said the road was reopened conditionally at around 7:00pm after the protesters held a telephonic conversation with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani.

He said the president assured to arrest the perpetrators and said the issue would be investigated by National Security Advisor Mohammad Hanif Atmar.

The president asked the people to bury the bodies which had been at the site of the protest since last Friday.

Ayan threatened to again block the highway if the demands of protesters could not met within seven days.
