Kabul gathering urges greater women’s role in diverse fields

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Giving the womeninfo-icon a greater role in different spheres of life and improving their condition in far-flung areas was emphasized at a gathering held in Kabul on Thursday to mark the gender’s day.

The event marking the International Women’s Day was organized at the central office of the Afghanistaninfo-icon Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) in Kabul.

AIHRC members, Counter-Narcotics Minister Salamat Azemi, British Ambassador in Kabul Nicolas Kay, UNAMA representatives, security officials and some women attended the gathering.

Human Rights Commission head Seema Samar said the Afghan women should have stakes in social, economical, political and the peace process spearheaded by the government.

“Women should be provided security from every aspect because their insecurity paves way for violence and women can be secured when they have a greater role in the security institutions,” she said.

She said women empowerment could ensure a family’s strength and their position in societyinfo-icon and could be effective in bringing peace and stability.

Currently 4,000 women work at the Ministry of Interior and 2,000 at the Ministry of Defense.

British Ambassador Nicholas Kay in his address to the gathering said the United Kingdom (UK) supported Afghanistan’s efforts at building the the capacity of women.

UNAMA Representative Reno said nearly 360 women had been killed and 860 others injured in Afghanistan in the outgoing solar yearinfo-icon.

He said more work was needed to improve the situation of women in urban and rural areas of Afghanistan
