Senate asks Taliban to accept govt’s peace offer

Mar 11, 2018 - 18:34

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Mesharano Jirgainfo-icon or Senate on Sunday asked the Talibaninfo-icon to accept the Afghan government peace offer and end the ongoing conflict in the country.

Mohammad Alem Ezedyar, deputy chairman of the upper house, told today’s session: “We want the Taliban to accept the unprecedented offer as no pretext is left to turn down it.”

He said the people of Afghanistaninfo-icon supported the peace process because it was their urgent need, but unfortunately the killing of common people had accelerated whenever the government had offered reconciliation.

Ezedyar said: “Peace cannot be a one way process.  In the war, only common people suffer the most. We hope pressures on Taliban and their supporters may increase and the group finally agrees to joining the peace process.”

Rahmatullah Achakzai, a lawmaker from Kandahar province, said he supported the government offer to the Taliban for reconciliation.

“If the Taliban are an independent they should accept the government peace offer,” he said.

Mohammad Ajan Mangal, a lawmaker from southeastern Paktia province, remarked the government peace offer had been unprecedented and needed greater people support.

He added the government offer was inclusive and now no pretext had been left with the Taliban to reject peace and reconciliation.

Senate Chairman Fazal Hadi Muslimyar said: “We hope the Taliban will finally listen the voice of the people of Afghanistan and prepare themselves for peace talks.”

He, however, said growing incidents of insecurity in some provinces showed that the Taliban did not want peace or there was another group that wanted to sabotage the government peace strategy.
