Taliban kill 7 police, briefly hold Paktia post

GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Seven policemen have been killed in an overnight Talibaninfo-icon militant in Zurmat district of southeastern Paktia province, an official said on Sunday.

An eight policeman was injured in the attack on a police post in Naik area of the district late on Saturday night, Zurmat district police chief 2nd Lt. Sayed Mir told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the Taliban had planted landmines on the road to Naik area and staged ambushes at three places.

The Taliban captured the police post in Naik area, killing  seven and injuring one police, Mir said. He said the post collapsed before reinforcements could reach the area but later the security force retook the post from insurgents, the district police chief said.

However, provincial police spokesman Sardar Wali Tabasum claimed four Taliban rebels were killed and three others wounded in the nighttime attack.

The Taliban have not yet commented about the incident.
