53 Taliban claimed killed, 28 wounded nationwide

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Security officials on Monday claimed killing at least 53 Talibaninfo-icon militants and wounding 28 others across the country since last night.

Rahmat Shah Qamti, fourth brigade army commander in Uruzgan province, told Pajhwok Afghan New security forces targeted Taliban hideouts in Khas Uruzgan and Chora districts late on Sunday night.

The nighttime raid resulted in the killing of 28 rebels and wounding of 16 others. Some weapons were also seized by security forces, he concluded.

The Taliban in a statement claimed capturing two security posts and inflicting casualties on security forces in Shashpar locality of Khas Uruzgan district.

Elsewhere, in Ghazni province, 14 Taliban were killed and a number of others were wounded in drone strikes in Mirkalan and Nazar Khan localities of Deh Yak district late on Sunday night.

Ghazni governor’s spokesman Mohammad Arif Noori said the drone targeted a home hosting a meeting of insurgents.

Rahmanullah, a resident of the area, said ten dead bodies were pulled out from the rubble until this morning.

However, Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, confirmed the killing of only five Taliban in the nighttime attack.

Separately, security forces pre-empted Taliban assaults on their posts in Ramazan Qala and Ali Asghar localities of Qalat, the provincial capital of southern Zabul province late on Sunday night.

Based on discovery, security forces attacked Taliban hideouts, killing nine and wounding five, the governor’s spokesman, Gul Islam Seyal said.

He said 11 motorbikes, one fielder model vehicle and a machine gun were captured by security forces.

Security forces and civilians escaped unhurt in the night raid, he concluded.

There was no word from the Taliban about the operation.

Separately, four Taliban militants were killed and three others wounded in Marja district of southern Helmand province late Sunday night, police said.

Police spokesman 2nd Lt. Abdul Salaam Afghan said the joint security operation was conducted in Wazir locality.

He said separately four Taliban militants were killed and two others wounded during a clearing operation in Sheen Gull locality of Nad Ali district.

Deputy police chief Col. Gulai Khan said a huge explosives depot was discovered in the same district during the ongoing clearing operation.

In southern Helmand, two civilians were killed and four others, including womeninfo-icon and children, were wounded when a rocket shell allegedly fired by security forces hit their home in Nawa district on Sunday night.

A security official, who declined to be identified, said the rocket was fired from a military base during a clash between with insurgents in Khusarabad area.

He said security forces had also suffered casualties in the attack, but provided no figures.

But provincial security officials expressed their unawareness about the attack in Khusarabad village.

In southeastern Khost province, unknown gunmen killed a police officer along with another person in Khost City, the provincial capital, on Sunday evening.

The officer was returning from a wedding party when came under attack from unknown assailants.

A government source said the slain police officer was cousin and gunner of a former provincial police.
