FARAH CITY (Pajhwok): Talibaninfo-icon have overrun the Anar Dara district of western Farah province, where clashes are ongoing, local sources say.

Hussain, a resident of Anar Dara, confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News the militants captured the district centre as a result of a coordinated attack at around 3am.

The insurgents also took control of the police station and intelligence office at 5am, he said, adding fierce clashes were underway between the insurgents and Afghan soldiers.

He accused the militants of setting alight some equipment of the district office complex and blowing up the police station.

Dadullah Qane, a public representative, verified the resident’s claim. He said the district centre had fallen into Taliban’s hands and both sides had suffered heavy casualties.

Qane said a firefight was underway. If the reinforcements did not reach the area in time, he warned, the security forces would suffer more casualties.

Asked for comments, the district police chief angrily replied: “You don’t let us do our job.” And then, he slammed the telephone.

On the other hand, Taliban’s spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi claimed the district centre had fallen to Taliban and security forces had suffered heavy casualties.

Last week, about 20 security personnel including several commandos were killed in a Taliban attack in the province.
