KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has termed the new solar yearinfo-icon as educationinfo-icon year, stressingthe need for paying more attention to the development of the vital sector.

The president said converting the Education Ministry into a thoroughly professional and apolitical institution was the top priority of his government.

Ghani expressed the views during a gathering marking the launch of the new academic year. The president launched the year by ringing the bell.

Ghani claimed the education system had improved in recent years and the number of professionally trained teachers and students had also risen.

He acknowledged 50 percent of schools in the country had no buildings, half of teachers did not meet modern standards, 3.5 million eligible children were out of school and around 1,000 schools had been closed across the country.

“Being president, I want to share new things with the nation on education. First, the new solar year has been the year of support for education and I have important messages this year.”

The president directed the authorities concerned to provide all possible support for promoting education and keep it among the top priorities.

He said a budget of over $200 million had been allocated for the construction of 6,000 schools. He directed the authorities to acquire land for schools which had been deprived of property.

The president added the Education Ministry had been able to get 6,51.5acres of land from people for schools in the past two year.

He called on people to discharge their religious duty by donating land for schools, just like they had donated160,000 acres of land for mosques.

In line with the cabinet order the Education Ministry had completed the draft for the salary scale of the teachers through which many teachers would be benefited until August this year.

The president said he had decided to conductthe teacherrecruitment process through the Independent Administrative Reform and Civil Services Commission (IARCSC). Paymentof bribes for teachingslots was an unacceptable crime.

Ghani recalled his promise to construct flats for teachershad not been kept satisfactorily. However, he assured the Urban Development Ministry and Land Authority had been directed to devise an effective strategy to resolve issues of teachers, returnees, internally-displaced people and relatives of martyrs.

Ghani also directed the Ministry of Communications to connect schools in the provincial capital through the internet facility.
