NIELI (Pajhwok): The Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) director for central Daikundi province has been detained on charges of moral corruption, misuse of authority and weapons smuggling.

Attorney Daud Amiri confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News a case against Qasim Qaseem-- the election panel’s provincial head -- had been referred to AGO. The case is currently being investigated.

He said moral corruption, misuse of authority and smuggling of weapons were among the charges framed against the IEC official.

Ali Akbar Natiqi, the governor’s spokesman, said Qaseem was detained last Wednesday. He scotched speculation about Qaseem’s release, saying the accused was still in custody. The IEC declined commenting on the issue.
