4,000 cases of violence on women recorded last year

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): More than 4,000 incidents of violence against womeninfo-icon have been registered in Afghanistaninfo-icon last solar yearinfo-icon that ended on March 21, a report said on Tuesday.

The joint report from the Ministry of Women’s Affairs (MoWA), the Attorney General Officer (AGO) and the Supreme Court (SC) put the total number of registered cases at 6,333 nationwide.

Of the cases 68 percent accounted for 4,290 incidents originated from family violence and the remaining divorce, denial of alimony and elopement.

Spogmai Wardak, deputy director of planing and policy for MoWA, told reporters here that 1,320 incidents of violence against women took place in Kabul last solar year, contributing 21 percent to the total cases.

There were 582 incidents of violence against the gender in western Farah province or nine percent of the total registered cases. Takhar and Balkh contributed six percent of the women related cases which had been registered.

Wardak said torture remained the leading and worse form of violence against women at 56 percent after it disgrace, threats stood at 17 percent, harassments at five percent and forced marriages at four percent.
