GARDEZ (Pajhwok): UN Secretary-General's Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistaninfo-icon, Toby Lanzer, on Thursday said the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, should resume its operations in southeastern Paktia province.

The UNHCR suspended its services in Paktia from about two years ago.

However, Lanzer, who met Paktia officials, said the UN refugee agency should resume its operations which he said were direly needed in the province after the repatriation of refugees.

The senior UN diplomat, who discussed different issues with local officials, said Paktia needed serious attention in healthinfo-icon, educationinfo-icon, reconstructioninfo-icon and other areas and their trip was aimed at assessing problems and demands here.

Lanzer and his delegation also met with Paktia public health officials and visited the Gardez 100-bed civil hospital.

He said the health sector needed more attention both in the provincial capital and districts of Paktia.

“I came to Gardez today and I will have more trips. The Worldinfo-icon Health Organization (WHO) and UN Development Program (UNDP) would pay more attention to Paktia because there is need for improvements,” he said.

He said reactivation of UNHCR in Paktia was important for zonal level. “I talked with Paktia governor about different issues including refugees and their repatriation, we would do our best to reactivate the UNHCR office here,” he added.

Paktia governor Shamim Khan Katawazai said he shared problems in all areas of the province with the visiting delegation.

He hoped UNHCR services would resume and the UN would help in development of Paktia.

The UNAMA team arrives in Paktia province at a time when a large number of children are out of school.
