US Congress delegation meets Ghani, Abdullah

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A visiting US Congress delegation called on President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah at the Presidential Palace said Thursday.

A statement from the Presidential Palace to Pajhwok Afghan News said President Ghani and Abdullah met the Congress delegation led by Nancy Pelosi today morning.

The president, talking on behalf of the Afghan people, welcomed Pelosi and her delegation and appreciated her country’s commitments and support to Afghanistaninfo-icon.

Ghani said joint cooperation in fighting terrorism and the US’s new strategy on Afghanistan and South Asia had ‘positively’ changed the environmentinfo-icon.

He said only a democratic system could be helpful in Afghanistan as the people of this country also supported this system.

The national unity government was committed to holding upcoming Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon and district councils’ elections and then the presidential polls transparently, Ghani added.

CEO Abdullah also welcomed the US delegation’s trip to Afghanistan and appreciated Washington’s cooperation with the Afghan government.

He said joint efforts had been effective at defeating the twin menace of terrorism and extremism.

On her part, Nancy Pelosi said the national unity government’s achievements had been significant during its three years of journey.

The implementation of future plans would bring more stability and peace to Afghanistan, she believed. Pelosi said her country was committed to long-term cooperation with Afghanistan and fighting terrorism.

Various issues, including womeninfo-icon’s participation, economic growth, investments, the role of the private sector, exports, imports, transit, regional cooperation, anti-corruption issues and some other topics also came for discussion at the meeting.
