PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The government of Pakistaninfo-icon has extended the deadline for the voluntary repatriation of Afghan refugees to June 30.

Since the resumption of the voluntary repatriation process, about 2,000 refugees had returned to Afghanistaninfo-icon in March, a UNHCR spokes was quoted as saying on Wednesday.

Speaking to The News, Qaiser Khan Afridi hoped the process would be stepped up in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces in coming months.

UNHCR's voluntary repatriation centres in Quetta and Nowshera would remain open, he said, adding the centres in Pakistan stayed closed from December 2017 to February 28, 2018 during the winter season.

"The UNHCR wants voluntary, safe, dignified and gradual return of the Afghan refugees to their home country," Afridi said, adding 1.4 million registered refugees were still living in Pakistan.
