Paktia huddle reviews electoral preparations in southeast

GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Afghan, NATOinfo-icon and US officials held a joint meeting on Thursday in the capital of Paktia province to discuss preparations for the Oct 20 parliamentary and district council elections in the southeastern zone.

The governors of southeastern provinces --- Paktia, Paktika, Khost, Ghazni, Midan Wardak and Bamyan provinces --- and provincial election commission heads were present at the meeting in Gardez city,.

Leaders from the 203 Thunder military corps in the southeast and  National Directorate of Security (NDSinfo-icon) representatives were also in attendance,

A statement from the Paktia’s governor’s house said the joint gathering discussed about security preparations, challenges and the voter registration process for the Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon and districts council elections.

Paktia Governor Shamim Khan Katawazai on the occasion said it was everyone’s duty to contribute to efforts at ensuring a stable and transparent atmosphere for the polls.

He said: “More work is needed to reduce difficulties to go for the elections in a safe environmentinfo-icon.”

Meanwhile, 203 Thunder Military Corps commander Maj. Gen. Shaor Gul said a joint military operation plan had been devised in coordination with the Independent Elections Commission (IECinfo-icon) to have transparent elections.

He said all efforts had been made to cover all areas for registration of voters.

US charges affairs and RS officials in the southeastern zone assured technical assistance in the election process and said the Afghan electoral bodies were well-prepared to hold transparent elections.

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) has announced October 20 a fresh date to hold elections to the Lower house of Parliament and districts councils.
