QALAT/KANDAHAR (Pajhwok): A district police chief from neighboring Zabul province was killed in a Talibaninfo-icon gun attack in the capital of southern Kandahar province on Saturday, officials said.

Gul Ahmad Grani, the Shahr-i-Safa district police chief in Zabul, came under attack as soon as he came out of his home in Jaddi area of Kandahar City in the limits of the ninth police district, said the Shahri Safa district administrative chief, Abdul Samad Durrani.

Kandahar governor’s spokesman Aziz Ahmad Aziz confirmed the incident and said Grani was a resident of Kandahar City and he had come home on vacation. The police officer was gunned down and his bodyguard wounded in the hit-and-run attack.

He added the assailants had managed to flee the area but police had launched their investigation into the incident.

There has been so far no claim of responsibility for the murder, the latest in a long series of targeted attacks.
