Participation in polls: Taliban spurns Ghani’s offer

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Talibaninfo-icon on Monday rejected President Ashraf Ghani’s offer to participate in the forthcoming parliamentary and district council elections.

A day earlier, the voter registration process began in all provincial capitals ahead of the Oct. 20 parliamentary and district council elections.

Earlier, Ghani stressed transparency in the elections, asking all people, including the Taliban, to participate in the democratic exercise.

Ghani said: “Today is a good day and we thank Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) members for taking this important step toward implementing the election law and the Constitution.”

However, Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi said they believed all the decisions regarding the country were taken by foreigners. The movement’s priority remained the pullout of foreign troops, he added.

“We have seen in past presidential elections, people were hoodwinked in the name of vote. The inevitable decision was taken by former US secretary of state John Kerry.  A different outcome of the next election can’t be expected,” he concluded.
