Nangarhar yields pine nuts worth 2 billion afs last year

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Last year’s worth of the pine nut yield in eastern Nangarhar province stood at two billion afghanis, the Ministry of Agricultureinfo-icon, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) said Saturday.

Pine nuts weighing some 2,000 tons were harvested in Nangarhar last year, a MAIL statement quoted Nangarhar’s agriculture director Rafiullah Rahimzai as saying.

His department created ‘a proper policy’ for agriculture development and the policy would go into effect once endorsed by the Presidential Palace and the Agriculture Ministry.

Under the new policy, Rahimzai said pine nut forests in Nangarhar would be revived and modern factories of pine nuts processing would be established to help increase revenue multiple times and protect the environmentinfo-icon.

According to state and private institutions, pine nut forests spread on 20,000 acres to 43,000 acres of area in Hesarak, Sherzad, Khogyani, Pachir Agam, Kot, Haska Mena, Achin, Nazyan and Spin Ghar districts.

The ongoing conflict, unfortunate incidents, deforestation and smuggling have inflicted heavy damages to the pine nut crop in the country.
