KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Afghan migrants at a detention centre in Indonesia have run riot, protesting what they called the administration’s harsh attitude.

They went on rampage at Balikpapan detention centre, damaging CCTV equipment and doors on Friday night, the Jakarta Post reported on Sunday.

Blasting the local administration for treating them like prisoners, the inmates demanded relocation outside Balikpapan.

“They broke 20 CCTV cameras,” Balikpapan police chief Wiwin Firta said. Police have deployed 180 personnel, including army personnel, to the detention centre to control the situation.

The International Organization for Migrationinfo-icon mediated between police and protestors, who sought to leave the detention centre.

Most of the unregistered migrants at the centre are Afghans seeking asylum in Australia. Indonesia is not a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention and thus considers them as illegal migrants.
