KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Air pollution has reached harmful level in central capital Kabul, said National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA) chief Shah Zaman Maiwandi on Tuesday.

Addressing a conference titled ‘Healthinfo-icon aspects of air pollution, problems and solutions,’ that discussed the country’s environmentinfo-icon, Maiwandi likened air pollution to “a silent enemy” which was very dangerous for human health. “Air pollution causes many diseases and even deaths among children.”

Fast growing population, the use of low quality fuel, high number of vehicles and smoke-producing machines were major air pollutants sending substances into the air which caused various diseases, he said.

He said air pollution had become serious in major cities, particularly Kabul city.

Maiwandi did not provide more details about the level of air pollution but NEPA officials had four months ago said that particles of dust in Kabul had reduced from 1,500 milli-microns in 2016 to 500 milli-microns in each cubic meter in 2017.

But that level of is still very high compared to international standards.

Bashir Ahmad Hamid, head of preventive medicine in the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), said air pollution 26 percent deaths in the country.

He said serious measures should be taken and people made aware about the hazards of air pollution and educate towards protection of environment.

State minister for Natural Disaster Management Najib Aqa Fahim, who was also present in the conference, said drought was among new risks that caused air pollution.

He asked NEPA and other relevant organs to work jointly towards dealing with the matter.
