NATO will support Afghan forces during election: Stoltenberg

BRUSSELS (Pajhwok): NATOinfo-icon to provide support to the Afghan security forces, with training, with advice and also with funding to make sure that the elections can be held in a safe way,The NATO alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said on Thursday.

Talking to reporters ahead of NATO Foreign Ministers meeting in Brussels, Stoltenberg said: “NATO has helped to create the environmentinfo-icon for this to happen, with our practical and political support. The secretary-general said ahead of NATO Foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels.”

“We will also address Afghanistaninfo-icon. We will focus on the prospects for peace and reconciliation.” He added.

Stoltenberg welcomed President Ashraf Ghani’s unprecedented offer of peace talks to the Talibaninfo-icon.

Taliban has to understand that they won’t win on the battlefield and should embrace president Ghanis generous & unconditional peace offer, he said.

 “We have renewed our commitment, including with significant troop increases and financial support.”  NATO secretary general added.

Stoltenberg also pointed out that he expects “that on Thursday, we will agree further details on the planning of a new NATO training mission in Iraq, with the aim of launching the mission at our Summit in July.”

NATO allies are concerned about another open-ended foreign assignment after more than a decade in Afghanistan. France and Germany are reportedly supportive of a larger Iraq mission, but limited in scope.
