GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Budding girls’ educationinfo-icon right campaigner Maryam Amarkhila on Wednesday visited some seminaries and schools in southeastern Paktia province, saying the province’s education sector needs fundamental work.

Amarkhila upon arrival in Gardez, the provincial capital, visited religious schools of boys and girls before heading to Ahmadabad district for the same purpose.

She heard problems and demands of the students and mingled with them for some time. The activist encouraged seminary and school pupils by giving them pens, notebooks and other educational materials with a smiling appeal to be honest with their learning.

Amarkhila, who braved harsh criticism, attacks and threats to her life as an advocate of education and fighting against the gender-based injustice , has been campaigning to educate girls and mobilize communities to raise awareness about the importance of girls education.

About the situation of educational process in Paktia, Amarkhila remarked even preliminary basic facilities were not available in most of the schools in the province. She identified the lack of buildings for schools, female teachers and a proper learning environmentinfo-icon as key challenges the education sector of Paktia province faces.

Maryam promised to make efforts at establishing the first of its kind science subjects park for children in the province. “My mission is to spread the message of peace by working in the education sector.”

“We want to encourage parents to send their daughters and sons to school. Problems exist in the girls education, I heard their problems and shared them with the provincial authorities. I will try to find other ways for their solution.”

Amarkhila also met with some womeninfo-icon and officials at the women’s affairs department. She said she planned to implement some programs to improve women’s economic situation in the province.

“Like a bird which cannot fly with one wing, a nation cannot achieve prosperity with their women staying aloof. I sat with elders of women and pleaded with them to allow their women to go shoulder to shoulder with them in achieving development. Considering their sincerity, I plan to implement some economic programs for women in this province.”

Paktia governor Shamim Khan Katawazai thanked Amarkhila for her attention to the province and assured of providing land and other related facilities for her proposed science park.

“Education and peace are two fundamental and inter-related subjects, in Paktia the environment to do every kind of activity is paved, everyone can do work fearlessly. We are with you (Amarkhila) in your mission,” said the governor.
