Awareness programs helped register more voters: IEC

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): As a result of countrywide awareness programs, more than 1.5 million people have so far registered to vote in the upcoming Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon and district council elections, the Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) said Monday.

Shafiullah Jalal, information and public awareness head at IEC, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the awareness programs were aimed at ensuring increased participation of people in the voter registration process and then elections.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News during an exclusive interview that those who had registered themselves as voters so far for across the country included 290,000 womeninfo-icon.

He said awareness programs were being carried out through televisions, radio stations, newspapers, social networks, printing press, posters and brochures.

“The commission has been able to air 1,774 minutes awareness programs on 14 televisions and 7,294 minutes on 67 local radio stations,” he said.

The public awareness department head said three persons had been tasked in every province with holding meetings with civil societyinfo-icon groups, government and non-government officials, women’s networks, religious scholars, prayer leaders and common people about voter awareness.

In addition, Shafiullah Jalal said adverts on 170 billboards had been installed to encourage people to get their tazkera.

The IEC awareness campaign is financial supported by the international community and the National Unity Government (NUG).
