Khalili asks IEC to reconsider sticker attachment
KABUL (Pajhwok): Wahdat-i-Islami political party leader Mohammad Karim Khalili has asked the Independent Election Commission (IEC
) to reconsider attaching stickers to identity cards (IDs) as part of voter registration.
Khalili, who got registered as voter on Wednesday at one of the voter registration centres in capital Kabul, said one reason why the registration process had been slow was the attachment of stickers on IDs.
He said some people might avoid registering to vote because they believed the rebels would recognize their ID cards.
Khalili expressed his reservations regarding the registration process after a last night meeting of President Ashraf Ghani with IEC officials and foreign ambassadors in Kabul.
Khalili said: “Armed rebels want to sabotage the voting process in Afghanistan and they would not allow basic steps to be taken for strengthening democracy in Afghanistan.”
Referring to the upcoming ulema conference in Indonesia, Khalili said the conference between ulema from Afghanistan, Pakistan
and Indonesia would be orgnaised on Friday.
Khalili, who heads the High Peace Council (HPC), said ulema from the three countries would discuss the Afghan peace process and share their views in this regard.
