Panjsheris oppose e-NICs, warn of armed uprising

May 09, 2018 - 16:01

PARAKH (Pajhwok): Residents of central Panjsher province on Wednesday protested against mentioning the word ‘Afghan’ in the electronic national identity cards (e-NIC).

Earlier, President Ghani and several other officials received their e-NICs and formally launched the process, which the people supported as well.

But Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Abdullah Abdullah opposed the move and called it an illegal process which he believed needed national-level discussion.

About 350 protestors staged a rally in Panjshir’s capital Parakh, strongly opposing the process.

Bashir Ahmad, one of the protestors, said: “We would not sell our identity and everyone’s identity should be added in the ID cards.”

However, the word Afghan, nationality and 14 major tribes are mentioned in the e-NICs. The protestors warned if their demands were not met, they would continue their protest.

Qiamuddin, another protestor, held similar views and warned: “If our demands are not met, we will continue our movement and will take up guns against government.
