JALALABAD (Pajhwok): At least 10 people were killed and another 40 wounded as a result of a Talibaninfo-icon assault in the capital of eastern Nangarhar province on Sunday, an official said.

A group of heavily armed insurgents stormed the provincial Revenue Department in Jalalabad, triggering a stand-off with security forces and then entering the building.

Attaullah Khogyani, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the assault ended with the killing of eight armed attackers at 6: 40am.

Ten people were killed and 40 others wounded, he said, adding that the security personnel, employees and civilians were among the victims.

Khogyani said the firefight lasted seven hours as the security forces strived to rescue employees of the department.

Meanwhile, Public Health Department spokesman Inamullah Miakhel said six bodies and 36 injured people were evacuated to hospitals.

He said the injured were in stable condition. Hospital workers were busy attending to the injured, he added.

Earlier, eyewitnesses told Pajhwok two suicide bombers threw grenades into the Revenue Department before blowing up their explosives and allowing several other gunmen to enter the compound.

President Ashraf Ghani strongly condemned the terrorist attack.“The terrorists are attacking government installations, infrastructure, schools and mosques to weaken our resolve of development.”

The president extended his deepest condolences to the families of victims and wished speedy recovery to the injured.
