Farah City comes under multi-pronged rebel attack

FARAH CITY (Pajhwok): Talibaninfo-icon insurgents have attacked the capital of western Farah province, overrunning the 3rd police district. Clashes are still ongoing.

Eyewitnesses told Pajhwok Afghan News the militants staged attacks on the provincial capital from four directions. Heavy and light weapons fire could be heard in the city.

A resident, who wished to go unnamed, said the rebels had captured the 3rd police district and stormed the intelligence department. Helicopters are targeting the assailants.

Mohammad Ismail, another resident, said the Taliban had launched search operations in their area. No one is allowed to come out of home.

Dr. Ahmad Zaki, a civil hospital official, said two bodies and 16 injured security personnel had been evacuated to hospital so far.

Brig. Gen. Abdul Raziq Sherzad, the deputy police chief, was among the injured, he added. Pajhwok tried to contact provincial authorities for comment, but failed.

Taliban spokesman Qari Mohammad Yousaf Ahmadi claimed the fighters had seized the 3rd police district, NDSinfo-icon department and some other areas. He asked residents to stay indoors.
