KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): Some residents in southwestern Khost province have asked the government to ensure security of voter registration centers.

As many as 51 voter registration centers have been set up in Khost City, the provincial capital, but residents say they fear attacks on the registration centers and those coming to the facilities for registration as voters.

Noorudddin, a resident, said due to security threats most of registration centers are situated in mosques and schools. He asked the government to increase security arrangements for the mosques.

“The government has established registration centers in mosques and schools and there is need for improved security arrangements because people do want to vote in upcoming polls,” he said.

Few weeks back a blast on a voter registration centre in Khost caused casualties which discouraged people to go to registration centers and register to vote.

Khan Badshah, another resident of Khost, told Pajhwok Afghan News said security should be enhanced at voter registration centers in order to people were encouraged.

Deputy Governor Sher Badshah Urgani told Pajhwok Afghan News that the provincial government had been awaiting the central government’s decision on shifting elsewhere registration centers from mosques and schools.

“If Kabulinfo-icon gives permission we will transfer registration centers to places where common people can easily come and go, “he said.

Deputy police chief Col. Abdul Hanan Zadran acknowledged security threats had discouraged people to register as voers and added they had been working on a plan to ensure security of voter registration centers.

In total 192 voter registration centers are operation in Khost province and out of them 51 centers are in Khost City.
