US soldier firing into truck found acting in line with rules

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A US soldier who allegedly shot into a civilian truck in Afghanistaninfo-icon acted in line with military rules, a three-month investigation reveals.

In an online video, which was later removed, the service member was seen in the gun turret of a mine-resistant vehicle firing a tactical shotgun at the driver.

The clips show soldiers hurling grenades into hiding holes, firing automatic weapons, grenade launchers, rockets and mortars, according to the Stars and Stripes.

As the video drew criticism, US Central Command head Gen. Joseph Votel said he was disappointed. A probe into the incident was initiated in January.

The US Army's Criminal Investigation Command found the Americans had "acted in accordance with the rules of engagement, said Christopher Grey, a spokesman for the command.

In a statement, Grey said: "An Afghan driver ignored several warnings not to encroach on the US convoy, so a non-lethal beanbag projectile was fired at the driver."

But information about the place where the shooting happened and the units involved remains under wraps. A copy of the investigation has not been released so far.

Matthew Nasuti, a military lawyer, called the findings unconvincing. A shot into the driver's window could have caused more harm than required, he believed.
