Voters facing security risk may get copy of ID card: IEC

Voters facing security risk may get copy of ID card: IEC

May 17, 2018 - 13:15

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The poll panel has restated its stance that voters should be registered for parliamentary and district council elections on the basis of original identity cards.

However, the Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) decided that the citizens, who might face security risk because of stickered ID cards, could get a copy of the document.

Some days back, the government decided to attach stickers to identity cards -- a move that drew opposition from four members of the commission, CEO Dr. Abdullah and others.

The critics claim there are legal and technical problems in attaching stickers of ID cards, and that it could pave ground for fraud in the October elections.

In a late-night press statement, the IEC said discussions on the use of original or photocopy of the card for voter registration had sparked concerns among the people.

In order to assuage the concerns, the statement said, the voter registration exercise was based on the production of original tazkira. The people were asked to get themselves documented as voters.

The commission said it had held consultations with the Population Registration Department on how to address security concerns among the people.

Voters whose security could be threatened by stickers attached to their tazkiras could visit the department to get copies of their ID cards, the statement added.
