WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo Thursday spoke over telephone with President Ashraf Ghani, during which he expressed support for the Afghan military’s defense of the city of Farah.

“Secretary Pompeo reinforced our enduring investment in Afghanistaninfo-icon, as outlined in the President’s South Asia strategy, and expressed support for the Afghan military’s defense of the city of Farah,” the State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a readout of the call.

This was the first telephonic conversation between the two leaders after Pompeo became the Secretary of State.

“He also commended President Ghani for his commitment to building a secure and prosperous future for his country and noted the government’s efforts to reform their institutions to ensure the upcoming elections are transparent, credible, and carried out on time,” she said.

“The two discussed the strong partnership between the United States and Afghanistan in the fight against terrorism and our support for an Afghan-led, Afghan-owned peace and reconciliation process,” Nauert said.

Earlier in the day, Pompeo thanked Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev fir huis support for international efforts to stabilize Afghanistan.

In their meeting at the Pentagon, the Defense Secretary James N. Mattis and the Uzbek President affirmed their shared commitment to stability in Afghanistan and continued security cooperation.
