KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The United Kingdom has renewed its commitment to NATOinfo-icon’s non-combat Resolute Support mission in Afghanistaninfo-icon.

In London, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said Britain played an important role and keep its contribution to the mission under constant review.

“The support the UK provides Afghanistan on security, development and governance is crucial to building a stable state and reducing the terrorist threat to the UK.”

Following a request from the United States, the United Kingdom could double the number of British troops in Afghanistan.

The BBC reported on Friday Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson had recommended a boost in the military presence in Afghanistan.

He made the recommendation in a letter to Prime Minister Theresa May. However, a final decision is yet to be taken. Over 600 British troops are currently stationed in Kabul.

President Donald Trump and NATO officials have urged allies to deploy more troops to the war-torn country to help train Afghan force.

The British prime minister is likely to make an announcement at a NATO summit in July.
