GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Local officials in southern Ghazni province on Tuesday denied the fall of Jaghatu and Deh Yak districts but acknowledged that 12 policemen were killed in Talibaninfo-icon attacks.

Mohammad Arif Noori, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the militants stormed security check-posts in the two districts late on Monday night.

“A Jaghatu police station remained under Taliban’s control for 45 minutes, but was retaken by the security forces. The rebels also closed on the Deh Yak district building but retreated,” he added.

Faiz Mohammad Topan, police chief of Deh Yak district, and Barakatullah Badakhshi unit commander, were among the 12 policemen killed in insurgent assaults.

On the other hand, provincial council member Naseer Ahmad Faqiri said that 20 policemen, including two commanders, were killed in firefights. “Fighting has ended now. Police casualties may be even higher.”

Meanwhile, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed the guerrillas had overran Jaghatu and Deh Yak districts. Several security forces had suffered casualties in the attacks, he concluded.
