HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): The Land Authority of western Herat province has created a database in compliance with a presidential order to determine the status of the state-owned land in the province.

Haris Akhtarzada, director of the authority, told Pajhwok Afghan News a technical team was currently scrutinising the areas of government departments. The areas will be recorded in the database.

He admitted governmental lands had been grabbed in past several years. But specific figures are yet to be worked out.

With the creation of the database, Akhtarzada hoped it would become clear how much of state land had been grabbed in Herat.

For a month, the official explained, work had been underway on ascertaining the total area of state land. He said the record of 25,000 acres of land scrutinised so far had been entered into the database.

Earlier, officials of the Land Authority had said more than 63,000 acres of land had been forcibly occupied in the province. But the current director called the figure inaccurate. He promised the exact situation of the state land emerge in a few months.

Jilani Farhad, the governor’s spokesman, emphasised on wresting back state-owned lands from strongmen. The department concerned was striving hard in this regard, he said.

A joint commission involving officials from various government departments has been working to prevent the usurpation of state properties in Herat. The panel is striving to get back grabbed lands.
