KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Four hundred voter registration centres in 10 districts, where polls may not be possible, could not be opened due to security threats, the Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) said on Thursday.

IEC Commissioner Syed Hafizullah Hashimi told Pajhwok Afghan News these registration centres could not be opened so far due to security threats. If the situation remained the same, conducting elections in the districts may not be possible.

Hashimi did not share details of the districts. In the past, he recalled, the number of registration centres under high security threat was 940. The process of voter registration could not be launched at these centres.

About a separate registration mechanism for districts out of government control, he said: “We will conduct the elections in areas where the government has full writ.”

The process of voter registration for Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon and District Council elections kicked off on April 14. Over 2.6 million people have been registered as voters so far.

Gen. Mohammad Radmanesh, spokesman for the Ministry of Defence (MoD), said the Afghan forces remained committed to ensuring security for the election and clearing operations in areas under high threat were underway.
