Yahyakhel district declared ‘open defecation free’

Yahyakhel district declared ‘open defecation free’

May 24, 2018 - 16:59

SHARANA (Pajhwok): The Yahyakhelo district in southeastern Paktika province has been declared as “clear” as far as healthcare related issues are concerned, an official said on Thursday.

Rural Rehabilitation and Development Department (RRD) director Najib Jahid told Pajhwok Afghan News the Integrated Medical Services (IMS) organization had been working in Yahyakhel district over the past three years.

Through IMS program, people of Yahyakhel were provided awareness about healthcare and hundreds of toilets were constructed to make the district Open Defecation Free (ODF).

Jahid said they monitored IMS activities, which were properly conducted.

Dr. Chinar, IMS organization head, said they constructed 2,000 toilets in the district. He said the target of healthcare had been achieved after three years of public awareness programs.

He said they spent no money on awareness program, but provided awareness to common people with the help of 21 employees.

In the past, people of Yayakhel district would go to fields for defecation which disturbed life in villages, but now the problem had been resolved.  He said previously non-availability of toilets generated multiple healthinfo-icon issues.

Syed Akbar, a resident of Yahyakhel district, said now every home has toilet and people did not feel the need to go out and defecate in fields and in the open.

“This helped prevent multiple health issues,” he said.
