KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): An ex-Russian pilot, who had disappeared in Afghanistaninfo-icon three decades ago, has been found alive, a news report said on Friday.

“He is still alive. It’s very astonishing. Now he needs help,” the head of the Russian paratroopers’ union, Valery Vostrotin, told RIA Novosti state news agency.

Meanwhile, TASS news agency quoted a source in the charity as saying that the former pilot could return home within a year.

"His return home will require intensive work on the part of public organisations and diplomats," it added.

The fund was given information about the pilot -- named Alexander Morozov -- by US counterparts.

In the decade-long conflict, 417 Soviet soldiers were declared missing or as prisoners of war.

Around 125 Soviet planes were shot down in Afghanistan during the war between 1979 and 1989.
