JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Identifying shelter as their biggest problem, carpet weavers in eastern Nangarhar province say all legal process of a township for them has been completed but is yet to be inaugurated.

The carpet weavers say when they get carpet making order from a company, they are asked about house ownership documents, but they live in rented homes and most of businessmen avoid inking contracts with the homeless.

Living in rented homes is an issue for carpet weavers as sometimes they are asked to vacate the home while carpets weaving in process.

Sharif Ahamdzai, a resident of Nangarhar, is associated with carpet weaving industry over the past 17 years. He now owns a small carpet industry where womeninfo-icon also work.

He said carpet weavers lacked their own homes, therefore people avoided giving them contracts.

“A contractor demands documents of home, but we live in rented homes and cannot give its documents,” he said.

Mohammad Tahir, another carpe weaver, also said due to non-availability of personal homes, carpet weavers suffered from heat in summer and cold in winter.

He added if a particular township was approved for carpet weavers, they could build a two-room homes --- one for carpet weaving and another for living.

“When carpet weaving is in the middle stages, owner of the houses asks us to evacuate the house or pay more rent. We have no other option but to accept the rent of his choice and as a result we don’t get profit from carpets and instead suffer losses,” he said.

Governor Hayatullah Hayat acknowledged the problem carpet weavers faced and assured he would find a solution to their problem.

He said in near future carpet weavers township would be officially inaugurated.

It is worth mentioning that currently around 5,000 women are associated with carpet weaving in the east.
